 Many sea turtles die each year because they ingest plastic bags and balloons they think are jellyfish! Next to trawling nets, plastic trash in the ocean is one of the main causes of sea turtle deaths! These magnificent creatures who can live longer than we can, that have graced our oceans for millions of years, are being killed because we're too lazy to bend over and pick up some trash! Even if it's not yours, Please...... PICK IT UP!
I have picked up more grocery bags and old mylar balloons than I can count. Now I'm not doing this or saying this to get kudos of any kind, I would just like to think that over the years maybe the hundreds of bags I pick up and throw away (and gosh, aren't those things recyclable anyhow?) will MAYBE save just one turtles life!
Next time you are on the beach and you see a piece of trash, please , pick it up. You don't have to get a trash bag full, join any groups or write any letters (although these are very good things to do), just pick up ONE piece of trash. I know it's probably not your trash, and maybe someone else will do it but how hard is it just to bend over and pocket it?
Many times (especially in the summer) I will see people walk right by a piece of trash, and I know they're probably thinking "Oh, what a shame", but do they pick it up, NOOOOOOOO! This is one of those points of light mentioned only a few years ago. It's a small thing YOU can do that may make a difference, and after all, how hard is it. We're all out there picking up shells and driftwood and sea glass anyway!
And if you think this is too much for you or if you think this is an unreasonable request, you can take you 'Ho-Ho eating',' Jerry Springer watching', 'I don't vote cause it won't make a difference' butt and get off the beach! (Excuse me did I burp?)
